Review of the collection of "Dadie Perlov"
This task will examine how celluloid items (a pre-plastic-semissible) have survived to the present day and establish the best conditions for the safeguarding and display of these artifacts, a research that has not yet been published in the context Portuguese. To this end, three private collections were selected: 300 celluloid objects, donated in 2019 by the American collector Dadie Perlov, and two private collections of celluloid dolls existing in Alcanena and at the Toy Museum (Viana do Castelo, Minho).
From these collections, this line of research proposes the recreation of past industrial practices related to the synthesis of cellulose nitrate and its transformation into celluloid objects for study and preservation. The goal is to reconstruct celluloid manufacturing on an industrial scale, as well as to understand the limitations inherent in the reproduction of a century-old process.
The celluloid references will also be used to test the best conditions for the preservation, safeguarding and exhibition of celluloid artifacts, which will be applied and tested throughout the exhibition foreseen in this project
